THERE IS NO ROOM FOR ANTI-TRANS AGENDAS IN THE UNITED NATIONS | SOLIDARITY STATEMENT SIGN-ON

ATTENTION AWID MEMBERS: SOLIDARITY STATEMENT SIGN ON

Since November 2022, the current UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, Reem Alsalem, has released a series of harmful statements advocating for additional obstacles and conditions to legal gender recognition. These statements are discriminatory and perpetuate anti-trans narratives that can fuel discrimination targeted at trans people. They undermine the indivisibility of the human rights framework, providing a foundation from which to validate restrictions against the bodily autonomy of women and girls, along with other marginalized groups. They also compromise the integrity of the UN Special Procedures as a whole.

The Special Rapporteurs hold a central role in the UN system as independent experts mandated to protect the rights of the marginalized and ensure implementation to remedy and prevent harm based on international human rights principles. The mandate of the Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, in particular, has been invaluable historically  to the work of feminist movements worldwide.

We call on AWID members and partners to sign on to our statement and make our collective message loud and clear: there is no place for anti-trans agendas in the UN!  Join this demand for accountability from the Special Rapporteur to halt these harmful practices and uphold the integrity of the mandate; and from the UN to ensure that voices and concerns of feminists, women’s rights, and LGBTIQ+ movements - particularly trans-led groups, are centered in its language and practices.

Sign on the statement, “There is No Place for Anti-Trans Agendas in the UN” in English, French and Spanish.
